WELCOME TO THE NEWEST GAME IN TOWN…
THE TORONTO NON-CONTACT HOCKEY LEAGUE (TNCHL)
TOP LEVEL HOCKEY WITH OUR CHILDREN'S HEALTH AND WELL-BEING
Doreen Ng-Bell on her 12 yr old son and the THCHL:
Our 12 yr old right winger son plays one year up Select and is frequently invited to A and AA tryouts but declines to attend because the hard hitting intimidates him. He has without question been "bull-charged" and injured but can rely on his speed and agility to "duck."
At a championship game last season, I was scared to tears-to shaking point in fact by the second period watching our players being rammed into the boards by bulls with such veracity and intent to injure. I have never allowed my kids to back down from any commitment but I did this time, he did not play the playoff final's against that same team. In anguish, I instigated an action headed by our head coach to demand from the NYHL the highest standard of refereeing at our next game against that same team. The NYHL was quick to meet the demands of our head coach and the game was how a hockey game should been refereed but unfortunately, the previous game left a huge imprint in our kids' minds, our team lost the game.
I cannot count the number of times my husband wants to petition to NYHL to forbid contact sport at this age, my response to him, "not in our lifetime".
Our son has such a passion for this game and has played Select since the age of 7. I absolutely agree that the TDSB hockey season was a showcase of how hockey can be played. My son was on the Humber Valley Jr School team against Palmerston at McCormick Arena, and I was in the stands and remember hearing "Go Phoenix" as I thought "what a great name". Thank you, Mr Clifford, we were so excited with your article in yesterday's Globe we immediately registered our son for your NCHL tryout. Thanks to you, the day has come when you can play highly skilled hockey with a puck that doesn't seem like a hot potato!!!
A true hockey mom who wears lipstick!!!!

Bodychecking a leading cause of injury in youth hockey: study (2009)
"We reviewed nine studies from Canada, nine from the U.S. and two from Finland, and the findings from all but one support recommendations that children should play in non-contact hockey leagues until they are at least at the bantam level", said Alison Macpherson, a professor in the School of Kinesiology and Health Science at York.
